What Happened
Search Engine Journal published its State of Search 2027 report on 18 September 2026, and its central argument is blunt: a fall in organic traffic is not, on its own, evidence that your business is being harmed.
The publication asks whether a traffic decline is actually hurting the business, then sets out what marketing leaders should stop doing, what they should measure instead, and where to put budget next. Search Engine Journal frames the question as a funding decision rather than a ranking emergency.
That framing lands in a market most UK marketers already recognise from their own analytics. As general industry context, when Google places an AI Overview above the organic listings, an informational query can resolve on the results page and never become a website session. Commercial and comparison queries behave differently, because those searchers still need pricing, stock levels, credentials or a contact form before they commit.
The distinction matters more than the percentage on the chart. Two UK businesses can lose an identical share of sessions and end up in completely different commercial positions, depending on which half of their traffic vanished. This is a different problem from the core update pattern of 2023 and early 2024, when ranking losses and revenue losses tended to move together. Here the ranking can survive intact while the click disappears.
Separating a traffic problem from a revenue problem
Before you act on a red line in a report, work out which queries you lost. Segment Search Console data by intent and review branded, informational and commercial groups separately, rather than judging the channel on one sitewide total.
Then look at the pages that actually generate enquiries:
– Are sessions to your service, product and location pages down, or only to blog and guide content?
– Has the conversion rate of the remaining organic sessions held steady or improved?
– Have enquiries, demo requests or inbound calls moved at all over the same period?
– Are impressions holding while clicks fall, which points to answers being served on the results page rather than lost rankings?
If enquiries are flat and your money pages are stable, you have a reporting problem rather than a commercial one. If commercial pages are down and enquiries followed within the same weeks, that is worth funding a response to. The way your buyers use search has changed, and the measurement has to change with it. For clients who want that read across both conventional rankings and AI answers, our AI services cover visibility in both places.
The metric that belongs at the top of the report
Put qualified enquiries from organic at the top of your search dashboard and sessions underneath. Sessions remain useful for diagnosis, but they no longer work as a headline number for a channel where a growing share of demand is satisfied before anyone clicks through.
What this means for your search reporting line
Plenty of clients arrive with a sessions target inherited from a 2019 strategy deck. We rebuild the reporting first, so organic performance is judged on enquiries, pipeline and revenue wherever the data supports it, with sessions and impressions retained as diagnostics. That alone usually changes which pages deserve the next round of investment.
We are also direct about timing. Most SEO campaigns show measurable movement at 4 to 6 months, not 4 to 6 weeks, and rebuilding your measurement does not shorten that. What it prevents is cutting budget on a channel still producing customers, or defending one that stopped producing them 2 quarters ago. How your customers use search will keep shifting, so this review works better as a standing quarterly item than a one-off exercise.
Questions about measuring search in an AI world
Our organic traffic is down but sales are flat. Should we be worried?
Probably not in the way the traffic chart implies. Check whether the lost sessions came from informational content, because stable commercial pages and steady enquiry volume point to a change in browsing behaviour rather than lost demand.
How long should we wait before reacting to a decline?
Give it 2 full reporting cycles unless commercial pages and enquiries fall together, which warrants investigation straight away.
Which report should we start with?
Search Console query and page data, filtered by intent group, then matched against enquiry volume from the same weeks in your CRM or form records.
Where to start with your own search review
If your board is asking hard questions about an organic traffic chart and you are not certain what it means commercially, a short conversation is often enough to work out which diagnosis applies. You can get in touch and we will talk through what your own data is showing.
